Key Stage 3 English

Key Stage 3 begins in Year 7 and finishes at the end of Year 9. All pupils are given a level of attainment at the end of Year 9 which can range between level 2 and level 7.

From the start of Year 7 English is divided into sets based on their end of KS2 examination results.

In Years 8 and 9 pupils are divided into sets depending on their performance in the subject during the previous academic year. These sets are reviewed each half of term with pupils’ placements within them being carefully reconsidered. Movement between sets occurs as the need arises.

All children in Years 7 to 9 study a wide range of texts. Each year they will study at least two works of fiction, a play and a selection of poetry. In Year 8 they are introduced to Shakespeare e.g. The Tempest or A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In Year 9 they will further develop their skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

All pupils in Year 7 and Year 8 have regular speaking and listening and drama lessons. There is an annual Arts Evening held in the summer term involving pupils from both key stages. There are theatre visits to a variety of venues around the Northwest. Theatre companies also regularly visit the school.

We also encourage the participation of pupils in the weekly drama club and Year 7 English Club.

We are also very successful in coaching our public speakers and regularly win local competitions. We are a thriving faculty looking forward to more success!
