Who are the GIFTED pupils?

Two thirds of the pupils on the Gifted and Talented cohort are gifted pupils with high academic ability, as indicated by their performance in Cognitive Ability Tests (CATs) and the KS2/3 Standard Assessment Test (SATs). These pupils are listed in the gifted section of the G&T register (See appendix 1). All departments with the exception of Art, Music P.E and Drama should highlight these pupils in their mark books and the pupil’s progress should be monitored in light of the targets laid out in the register. 

Who are the TALENTED pupils?

One third of the cohort is made up of talented pupils, identified as having a particular ability in art, music P.E or Drama. These pupils are listed in the talented section of the register.  The Art, Music P.E and Drama departments should highlight these pupils in their mark books and monitor their progress.

How are they identified? 

Early identification, assessment and provision is very important for any gifted/talented child:

Early identification of G&T pupils starts through liaison with our Primary feeder schools.  The SEN teacher with the responsibility for Primary Liaison visits our feeder schools to meet prospective pupils and teachers during the year prior to their transfer to the secondary school.

During the first term all Year 7 pupils are given a Reading Test (indicating reading and comprehension ages), a Spelling Test and a Non-verbal Reasoning Test.  Identification of G&T pupils will be partly based on the results of these tests which are culturally neutral and useful for a range of ethnic groups.

These tests are used together with Key Stage 2 SATs data to identify GIFTED pupils.

The TALENTED pupils are identified and recommended by the relevant subject teachers.
