Physical Education

The Physical Education faculty uphold a true ‘commitment to excellence’ in all that we do. We aim to provide pupils with many different experiences within a diverse and engaging curriculum that challenges them both physically and academically.

Every student at Wade Deacon studies two hours of Physical Education per week as it is a core subject in the National Curriculum. In Years 7, 8and 9 pupils will experience a variety of sports with the aim to promote a lifelong love of physical activity.

At KS4 students will have the option to select from 4 different pathways: GCSE PE, Cambridge National Sports Studies, BTEC Dance or BTEC Health and Social Care. GCSE PE, Sports Studies and BTEC Dance classes will take part in 3 theory and 2 practical lesson every 2 weeks. Health and Social Care students will have 5 theory lessons over the 2 week timetable.

Curriculum Aims

The PE curriculum will promote and develop a lifelong love of sport and physical activity. Students will be able to know, do and remember more within the sporting arena. Students will study a wide variety of sporting and enrichment activities which will not only improve their sporting abilities but also their understanding of the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. Our 5-year curriculum promotes teamwork, resilience, problem solving and leadership skills through carefully sequenced lessons and a wide variety of different sporting activities.

Curriculum Journey

Key Stage 3 Learning Journey

Year 7

Pupils will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports throughout the year. During this Foundation year, pupils will learn the fundamental skills in a range of sports that can be developed throughout Foundation Stage and KS4. The aim is to open pupils up to the variety of activities available to them both at school and the local area and teach them the benefits that exercise and sport can have.

Year 8

Students will further develop all fundamental skills learnt in year 7. Pupils will develop their understanding of the skill and health related fitness requirements needed to improve in all sports as well as the methods of training. All pupils will develop their leadership qualities and will have an opportunity to lead within lessons. At the end of Year 8, students will be placed on personalised pathways in readiness for Key Stage 4.

Year 9

Students will continue to develop and refine their practical skills to a more advanced level while focusing on improving their awareness of the physical and mental aspects of sporting success.

Year 10 & 11

All students will take part in two hours of active PE each week as well as having the opportunity to choose a qualification in sport, PE or dance.
