This week, students and staff at Wade Deacon High School came together to mark Remembrance Day with a moving and reflective series of events that honoured those who have served — and continue to serve — our country.
Our Forces Cadets, alongside Mr Tyrer, led a thoughtful and informative assembly reminding us of the importance of remembrance and the enduring sacrifices made by our veterans.
At 10:50am, the entire school paused together in quiet reflection outside classrooms to observe this significant moment.
At 10:52, the haunting notes of The Last Post called our school to stillness — a powerful moment to honour those who gave their lives and to reflect on the true meaning of remembrance.
At 10:54, the school observed two minutes of silence, standing together in unity and gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy today.
At 10:56, Reveille sounded, bright and uplifting, symbolising renewal, courage, and the duty to carry forward the values of those we remember.
The commemoration concluded with a beautiful rendition of Abide With Me performed by our school choir — a moment of shared reflection and hope for the future.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mr Gallagher, our talented choir, and the musicians whose performance was described by Mr Deeney, Head of School, as “phenomenal.”
We are also incredibly proud of our Forces Cadets, who sold poppies before school and during form time, raising funds in support of the Royal British Legion.
As part of our commemorations, students from Years 7 to 9 in the Creative Writing Club have completed a moving project entitled Poppies From Our Past. This initiative connects Wade Deacon students past and present through poetry and personal reflection.
Inspired by the symbol of the poppy and our school’s long history, students wrote their own war poems and letters of gratitude to former Wade Deacon students who served their country.
These thoughtful pieces are now displayed in our school library, alongside the memorial to our former students and our students’ Poppy Stall. The display stands as a powerful reminder of courage, sacrifice, and the importance of remembering those who came before us.
A heartfelt thank you to Ms Adams and the Creative Writing Club for their creativity, compassion, and dedication in bringing this project to life. Students are encouraged to visit the library and contribute their own reflections using the writing templates available.
Finally, a special thank you to Mr Tyrer for organising such a meaningful and respectful experience for our entire school community — one that brought together music, writing, and remembrance in a shared spirit of gratitude and reflection.
