History

Curriculum Aims

We will ensure our students develop the essential knowledge needed to become responsible citizens by introducing them to the best and worst that has been done and said and helping them to appreciate our moral obligations.

History at Wade Deacon guarantees to represent the past of the students that we teach. As they study the curriculum, all will be able to identify a part of their ancestry regardless of their genetic makeup. Students will explore the diversity of Britain and its people, even though those who documented the past were often white, rich and male, making their chronicles an interpretation. This will help learners to understand and challenge misconceptions about modern British diversity, especially in the demographic of Wade Deacon.

Through the study of a global History at Wade Deacon, students will judge the significance of specific events, individuals and periods of time and why other events and periods of time are not considered important enough to include in the compulsory curriculum. They will also be equipped to weigh evidence and develop perspective and ask questions. At the completion of Key stage 3 history, pupils will have a better understanding of humans, their motives and consequences on those around them and learn why some topics are still emotional and sensitive issues that need to be studied in a tactful and mature way. History demands a high level of literacy and oracy and expectations of these skills is high.

The history curriculum is not fixed, it is fluid and will be continually evaluated to assess its relevance. At the culmination of the course, students will leave wishing to pursue their interest in history, whether through further academic study or through independent enquiry.

At Wade Deacon, the history department provides a curriculum that is ambitious for all pupils, it is content structured as narrative over time. It covers the requirements of the statutory national curriculum in a coherent and chronological order at key stage 3, with interleaving sequencing at key stage 4. The curriculum is broad and balanced to be inclusive for all students. At the culmination of key stage 3, students will be able to explain change over time, create balanced arguments and place periods of time in chronological order. History supports students by using cross curricular mapping with subjects such as English and Geography, and use a common vocabulary to ease progression for students.
